JHS's Howell commits to Eastern
A Jacksonville High School baseball player has announced he will be continuing his academic and athletic career on the other side of the state.
JHS junior Caleb Howell has verbally committed to Eastern Illinois where he projects he will remain in the outfield. He can't officially sign until the first week of November.
Howell says he was made an offer once and told the team he wanted to think about it. Later, the team upped their offer and Howell accepted.
He says Eastern is getting a player that will be trying to earn his keep for the next four years.
He says his speed in the field and on the base paths has been his number one asset, but there are some things he needs to work at before he can be successful in Division I baseball.
The all-state player hit .484 with 29 RBI last year while using his speed to rack up 21 stolen bases and 15 extra base hits, a JHS season record.
He joins fellow Central State Eight player Jacob Reece as an EIU commit. Reece led Chatham Glenwood to the Class 3A state title last month.
