JHS, Routt players named All-Staters
Two Jacksonville baseball player are garnering some post-season accolades.
JHS senior outfielder Caleb Howell was named to the Class 3A Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association All-State team. Routt’s Ben Heinemann was placed on the Class 1A team.
Howell is on pace to break 15 of 26 JHS baseball records by the time his high school career is over.
In just three years the Division I-recruit has broken the record for triples in a season with five (Mark Daniles, 1982, 4), single season batting average with a .484 average last year (Barry Werries, .483, 1985), and already holds the career stolen base mark with 49 (Ben Wagner, 2004-2007, 44).
Coach PJ Moore wouldn't go into details but says several Division I schools in the Midwest and Midsouth are actively recruiting Howell.
Heinemann hit .465 with six homeruns and 39 stolen bases while leading off for the Rockets last year. For his career, the LLCC recruit hit .420 with 106 stolen bases.
Four other players from the Central State 8 were tagged for the Class 3A team: senior catcher Jacob Reese, junior pitcher Phil Maton and senior outfielder Jake Ingold, all of whom are from state champion Chatham Glenwood. Sacred Heart-Griffin’s senior infielder Mike Hurtwitz also earned the honor.
